The region saw an improvement in its unemployment rate last month, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.
The agency reports the region’s seasonally adjusted three month moving average unemployment rate was 6.7 per cent in June, down from 7.5 per cent in May.
Nationally, Canada’s unemployment rate stood at 6.5 per cent in June.
Among nearby Ontario communities, Kingston reported an unemployment rate of 5.8 per cent, while Peterborough was 6.4 per cent. Oshawa remained one of the highest in the province at 8.5 per cent, while London and Barrie each posted rates of 8.2 per cent.
Statistics Canada cautions that unemployment estimates for individual metropolitan areas are based on relatively small statistical samples and can fluctuate significantly from month to month. For that reason, the agency publishes seasonally adjusted three month moving averages to provide a more stable picture of local labour market conditions.
The June figures were released alongside the national labour force survey on July 10.
