Construction is set to begin next month on a major urban renewal project in Grafton aimed at improving road conditions, pedestrian safety and aging infrastructure.
Northumberland County says work will begin Tuesday, August 4, and is expected to continue through October.
The project, being completed in partnership with the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand, will focus on County Road 2 from near the Haldimand Community Memorial Arena to 150 metres east of the Lyle Street South intersection. Work will also extend north along Lyle Street South for 200 metres.
Planned upgrades include relocating the pedestrian crossover at Old Danforth Road, installing a new pedestrian crossover near the arena, adding sidewalk along Old Danforth Road, replacing sections of storm sewer infrastructure and reconstructing the roadway.
Minor curb and gutter repairs and new pavement markings will also be completed.
Northumberland County Associate Director of Engineering Peter Deshane says the project is an investment in the community’s long-term safety and livability.
The county says at least one lane of traffic will remain open during construction hours, with two lanes reopened outside working hours whenever possible.
Motorists should expect temporary lane closures, reduced speeds and delays. Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained throughout the project.
