The Port Hope Flyers have captured their first Ontario Baseball Association senior C championship since 2009, ending a lengthy title drought on their home diamond.
The Flyers hosted the senior C tournament this past weekend, going unbeaten through their first four games before defeating the Clarington Cubs in a two-game final at Town Park. Games were also played in Cobourg.
Port Hope opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over the Essex Yellow Jackets, followed by victories over Clarington and the Clarksburg Blues.
The Flyers then returned to Essex in the semifinal, earning a 4-1 victory to reach the championship series with a perfect record.
The Flyers entered the tournament with the pressure of recent history. Since 2017, the team had struggled to advance through the double-knockout format, with early losses often leaving Port Hope facing elimination by Saturday morning.
This time, the Flyers avoided that familiar fate and finished the weekend as provincial champions.
