Lakelands Public Health says the first laboratory-confirmed influenza case of the respiratory season has been reported in Peterborough, marking an earlier start to flu activity than last year.
The case involves Influenza A and was confirmed in the City of Peterborough. The first flu case in the region last year was reported in October.
The health unit says the latest confirmation signals the beginning of the respiratory illness season across the Lakelands region, which includes Peterborough, Northumberland County and Alderville First Nation.
During the previous respiratory season, the region recorded 1,104 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza.
Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Thomas Piggott says preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses is a shared responsibility.
“We all have a role to play in prevention to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities,” Piggott said.
Lakelands Public Health is encouraging residents to take precautions as flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, begin circulating.
People who are feeling unwell are being advised to stay home where possible to reduce the risk of passing illness to others.
The health unit also recommends regular handwashing, cleaning frequently touched surfaces and covering coughs and sneezes with an elbow or arm.
Flu vaccination is expected to become available in October and will be provided free to anyone six months of age and older.
The health unit says taking preventative measures can help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses and protect people throughout the season.
