A fundraiser has been launched by members of Canada’s Jewish community to support Belleville Police Const. Jeff Smith, who was critically injured in the shooting outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Sept. 20.
Organizers say donations are intended to help Smith and his family during his recovery and recognize his actions protecting worshippers during Yom Kippur services.
The campaign remains open indefinitely, with organizers working with Belleville police to determine how funds will be distributed directly to Smith and his family.
No money has been withdrawn or distributed, organizers say.
