Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services is marking Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 4 to 10 with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety.
This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” encourages residents to take precautions when charging phones, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters.
Residents are also invited to an open house Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at three locations: Town Park Recreation Centre, Fire Station 2 and Fire Station 3.
The events will include a touch-a-truck, free barbecue and live demonstrations on lithium-ion battery safety.
Fire officials advised residents to use manufacturer-approved chargers, charge devices on hard, flat surfaces and unplug them once fully charged. Devices showing signs of overheating, swelling, smoke or unusual odours should no longer be used.
