Construction has officially begun on a new Animal Care and Adoption Centre for the Northumberland Humane Society in Cobourg, launching a $4-million campaign to redevelop the organization’s existing facility.
The humane society marked the start of work Tuesday with a groundbreaking ceremony at its Theatre Road South property. Community leaders, volunteers, donors and project partners attended the event. The first phase is expected to be completed in August 2027, with two additional phases planned to follow.
The campaign, called “Built on Second Chances — Where Animals Find Their Way Home,” will support the redevelopment of a facility built nearly three decades ago as a municipal pound. Humane society board and campaign chair Denise O’Brien says the new centre will help the organization prepare for the next 60 years of animal care.
The first phase will add about 6,100 square feet and increase space for animal care and adoptions. Plans include new dog pods and 12 additional adoption kennels, upgraded cat accommodations, meet-and-greet areas, accessible washrooms, improved reception and surrender spaces, as well as new kitchen and laundry facilities.
Later phases will add dog enrichment and training areas, grooming and shower facilities, improved intake and isolation areas, and expanded veterinary and community animal welfare services.
Director of animal care Wendy Riley says the project is being designed around the needs of animals while also improving working conditions for staff and volunteers.
