The Capitol Theatre in Port Hope has announced its 2027 season, titled Who We Are, featuring Canadian classics, comedy, musicals, original productions and live music.
Artistic Director Rob Kempson says the season celebrates the many identities that make up communities and encourages self-expression and shared experiences.
The mainstage lineup includes David French’s Canadian classic Salt-Water Moon, Mark Crawford’s comedy The Birds and the Bees, the Tony Award-winning musical Urinetown and the return of the Capitol’s original musical Rez Gas. The latter will run from Aug. 20 to Sept. 5 before touring to the National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre in October.
Kempson is particularly excited about Urinetown, a musical that is often overlooked for obvious reasons.
The theatre’s holiday production will be the world premiere of The Emperor’s New Clothes: A Pins & Needles Panto, running from Nov. 19 through Jan. 1, 2028.
The Second Stage Series includes Songs for Blondes, Playlist and Performance Review. The latter will be performed at Milly’s Market, across the street from the theatre.
The Music Lovers’ Series features Piano Heist, Over the Rainbow: The Harold Arlen Story and Feelin’ Bublé.
Rez Gas is another production Kempson says audiences should not miss. He describes it as a hometown offering, and its return following its 2025 premiere is expected to be a major draw this season.
Subscriptions are now on sale, with discounts of up to 15 per cent available until Dec. 31. Single tickets are expected to go on sale in early 2027.
