The Cobourg councillor candidates’ debate took place Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Cobourg Lions Centre as part of the 2026 municipal election campaign. The event was organized by the community-led group Cobourg Debates and began at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.
All 12 councillor candidates were on hand to answer predetermined questions from voters on a wide range of topics and local issues.
Of particular interest last night was the discussion surrounding Cobourg’s Official Plan, which addresses issues such as housing density, infrastructure and affordability, among other concerns. Councillor Barber pointed to the Cobourg waterfront as a major concern.
Councillor Miriam Mutton used plain language when she noted that residents first need to know where they are before they can determine where they are going.
The debate was intended to give voters an opportunity to hear candidates respond to questions about local issues under the same rules. Questions were collected from residents in advance, reviewed for common themes and developed into neutral questions for the candidates.
The event was also livestreamed by YourTV and made available online. The same will be true for Thursday night’s mayoral and deputy mayoral debate, which has been sold out for several days.
