The Port Hope Police Service is temporarily suspending its use of Crime Stoppers following a cybersecurity incident involving a third-party platform used by the organization.
Police say the decision is a precautionary measure while the incident’s potential impact on the privacy, confidentiality and anonymity of tipsters is assessed.
Chief Tim Farquharson says the service is seeking further assurances about the platform’s security and exploring alternative ways for residents to provide information safely.
Anyone concerned about previously submitted tips or personal information is encouraged to contact the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association. Police say they will provide updates as more verified information becomes available.
