Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to test their carbon monoxide alarms during Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, running Nov. 1 to 7.
Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that can cause serious illness or death. Ontario Fire Code changes that took effect Jan. 1, 2026, require alarms on every storey of homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances.
Residents are encouraged to test alarms monthly, replace batteries annually when needed and have fuel-burning appliances serviced regularly.
If an alarm sounds or symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning develop, leave the home immediately and call emergency services once safely outside.
