A neighbour helped prevent a potentially serious fire from spreading after spotting smoke and flames coming from the roof of a Cobourg home Sunday afternoon.
Cobourg firefighters were called to a residence on D’Arcy Street around 3:40 p.m. Nov. 1 after the neighbour alerted the homeowner and contacted emergency services.
The fire appears to have started near a bathroom ceiling fan, although an investigator will examine the area to determine the exact cause.
Most of the damage was confined to the attic and roof, with no damage estimate available. Hydro and natural gas service were shut off as a precaution.
Ashfield credited the neighbour’s actions with potentially preventing more extensive damage, noting smoke escaping through roof vents may not have triggered the home’s smoke alarms.
D’Arcy Street was temporarily closed between University Avenue East and Gravely Street while emergency crews responded.
