Cobourg will mark Marie Dressler Celebration Day on Nov. 9 with a free event at Victoria Hall featuring Canadian author and film historian Paul Langan.
The event runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Citizens’ Forum and will include screenings of Dressler’s films, a discussion of Langan’s book, Crossing the Border: Canada’s Forgotten Actresses of the Silent Film Era, refreshments and a prize draw. Books will be available for $25.
Born in Cobourg on Nov. 9, 1868, Dressler became a major Hollywood star, winning an Academy Award for her performance in “Min and Bill” in 1930. She also received an Oscar nomination for “Emma” in 1932.
Langan’s 692-page book profiles 32 Canadian women who helped shape the silent-film industry, including Dressler, Mary Pickford and Norma Shearer. Admission to the celebration is free, with donations welcome.
