38 newcomers from around the globe took the Oath of Canadian Citizenship at a ceremony held at Victoria Hall Friday (Oct 25).
Maria and her family are from the Dominican Republic and now reside in the GTA and Montreal. She shares with us more about their story.
Cobourg Mayor John Henderson says sometimes we take being Canadian for granted.
The ceremony highlighted the rights and responsibilities of being a Canadian; it was the final step for these individuals to obtain Canadian citizenship.
Maria tells us what it means to her and her family to be Canadian.
Mayor Henderson says it was his first time he’s been able to host a citizenship ceremony.
Henderson adds that he wanted to do one of these ceremonies during his term.
Henderson tells us he got emotional with the the singing of “Oh Canada” by these new Canadians for the first time.
Some of the comments given during speeches were, “Your success is our success”, “Making Canada stronger and more vibrant” and “Although we have different pasts, we will share the same future on this chosen land”.
