The Candlelight Walk for Breast Cancer Research has been running in Northumberland for 22 years, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a pause has been put on the walk itself but not the fundraising.
Every year, the walk highlights someone in the community and this year it would’ve been Tracy Kitchen of Taps and Corks on King, who lost her second battle earlier this year.
Nancy Marshall, Survivor Thriver and fundraising chair for the Candlelight Walk, tells us more.
Last year, $16,000 was raised through the walk and through fundraising online (at survivorthrivers.com) and Marshall says they’re hoping to raise $8,000 this year.
At 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, the Survivor Thrivers meet over ZOOM for a support group that anyone can join by visit ing survivorthrivers.com/support-group.html.
Marshall tell us more.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women and an estimated 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, with 1 in 31 dying from the disease.
The Canadian Cancer Society estimates an 80-million-dollar shortfall this year due to the pandemic and the loss of fundraising revenue from in-person events.
