Relay for Life brings together thousands of people across the country who are walking to raise funds to support Canadians living with cancer. This year’s annual event will be held on Saturday, June 10th, 2023 and the local Bay of Quinte chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society, is now accepting registrations from individuals and teams.
At one time, there was 4 separate relays in the area, but last year, Brighton, Quinte West, Belleville and Prince Edward County chapters amalgamated their efforts into one event under the banner of the 1st Annual Bay of Quinte Relay for Life and they are busy preparing for the 2nd annual event in Trenton, Ontario.
Bay of Quinte Relay for Life Coordinator Karen White told us why they combined efforts.
This year’s event is being held on Saturday, June 10th at Trenton High School and will run from 2:00 pm to 11:00 p.m. and registrations are now being accepted.
Participants will be walking the track at Trenton High School. There will be 3 live bands playing during the event, team activities and games, spirit laps and of course, food trucks on site.
“We have lots of volunteers who will be working to make the event fun,” said Karen White. “We are so fortunate to have such wonderful support from sponsors in all 4 of our areas but I would like to thank the Brighton Rotary and Legion for their continuing support.”
Last year the event raised $45,000 and this year’s goal is $56,000.
As part of the registration, participants receive pledges for their walk from their friends and family.
This year’s theme is Move and be Moved, and there will also be an inspirational luminary ceremony at dusk where participants will be releasing luminary bags in memory of those lost to cancer.
White’s connection to this cause is personal.
“I lost my husband Paul and brother, Steve to cancer and I currently have a sister who is living with cancer because of the advances in research and treatment options that the dollars raised have provided,” added White. “My team is P.S. I Love You.”
