Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario (STSCO), in cooperation with the three local school boards, is taking a proactive approach to address a potential shortage of bus drivers come the new school year in the fall.
Drive Yellow STSCO, a multi-media campaign, was launched May 1st with the goal of ensuring there are enough drivers for all of the local school bus routes.
According to STSCO CAO Joe Sloggett, a debilitating shortage of drivers is a hangover from the pandemic years that is still being felt.
Sloggett notes driving a school bus is a good fit for a number of reasons.
While the Drive Yellow STSCO campaign will roll out on media platforms and through community outreach involving partners, Sloggett agrees the best ambassador of the merits of driving a school bus are the driver themselves.
The end goal, notes Sloggett, is to not only have enough drivers for some 600 buses but also build up a roster of spare drivers that can be called in when needed.
