We’ve got the full list of the hometown heroes and future inductees that were honoured during Cobourg & District Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner.
8 inductees received the title of “Hall of Famer” during this year’s ceremony. To go along with them, Certificates of Recognition were presented to the Male and Female Athletes of the Year from Cobourg Collegiate Institute and St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary.
Two St. Mary’s students were also announced as the recipients of the Ross Quigley award, in honour of the hall’s founder.
2012 silver medal rowing Olympian, Jeremiah Brown, says the hall presents an oppurtunity to build confidence for the community’s next generation of athletes.
Brown, a Cobourg native, was one of the inductees recognized for his achievements during Friday’s ceremony.
The seven other inductees proved just as impressive:
- Don Ball Sr., team member on the winning team during Canadian Football Intermediate “A” Championship in 1948.
- Faye Gaudet, Bantam B Ontario Championship winner and only woman inductee of the evening
- Clarke Harnden, Cobourg hockey legend.
- Coach Jerry Lawless, Who once coached the CDCI soccer team and volleyball team to wins on the same day.
- Terry Lewis, first ever OHA Cobourg Cougars win as team captain, 1973-74
- Leo Reyns, 1975 OFSAA gold medalist.
- Ewart Timlin, longtime Fastball player-coach.
Each inductee represents a diverse piece of sporting history in Cobourg. CDSHF Secretary Don Conway explains he sees the Hall of Fame as a token of gratitude to pillars in the sports community.
The athletes recognized as the Male and Athletes of the year include Abdullah Al-Salihi of CGI, and St. Mary’s student Jack Kelly.
Female of the Year athletes posted two co-female athletes from CGI: Mackenzie St. John and Maci Davis from CGI, as well as St. Mary’s student Maya Ryglewicz
Lastly, the recipients of the 2023 Ross Quigley Awards were Andrex Kellar, a grade-12 honour roll student and previous captain of the St. Mary rugby team; and Sydney Ripe, an honour roll student and player on four different sports teams.
Jeremiah Hall explained that having a “small-town stage” to build him up was a factor to reach his goals.
