The Municipality of Port Hope is intensifying efforts to safeguard the Ganaraska River during the 2024 Salmon migration and fishing season.
Collaborating closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), local police, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), and the community, Port Hope is addressing the ongoing concerns related to the river’s protection. Although the Municipality does not have direct authority over fishing regulations, it actively supports and participates in discussions led by the MNRF.
In response to these concerns, Port Hope’s Council has directed Mayor Hankivsky to engage with the Ministry to request a temporary variance order for the 2024 season. This order, if granted, would provide a short-term adjustment to fishing regulations to address unique challenges during the salmon run.
Additionally, the Municipality has introduced several initiatives to preserve the river’s integrity. Special Constables from Port Hope Police Services will patrol the river, while Municipal Law Enforcement officers, trained in Ministry regulations, will monitor the area, focusing on garbage disposal, fish waste, and parking infractions. OFAH will also contribute through its “Bring Back the Salmon” initiative, promoting river stewardship among the angling community.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to report issues via an updated form on the Municipality’s website.
