Jacob Kim has been honoured with the 2024 Dixie Mikel Scholarship by the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Auxiliary for his exceptional dedication and commitment to volunteerism.
Kim, a longstanding student volunteer, accumulated an impressive 520 hours across five departments at NHH, demonstrating his passion for healthcare and community service.
The Dixie Mikel Scholarship, valued at $1,250, was established in memory of Yvonne (Dixie) Mikel, the late wife of Dr. Don Mikel and founder of the Student Auxiliary Volunteer program at the former Cobourg hospital site. It is awarded annually to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to healthcare through volunteerism and academic pursuits in health sciences.
Jacob Kim, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from McMaster University in 2023, is now pursuing a nursing degree at Trent University. Inspired by his volunteer experiences, he hopes to specialise in emergency nursing. “Through my time at NHH, I have seen the impact nurses have in providing compassionate care,” Kim stated.
NHH Auxiliary President Selena Forsyth expressed her congratulations, highlighting the importance of recognising young individuals like Kim who strive to make a difference in their community.
Applications for the 2025 Dixie Mikel Scholarship are due by July 30, 2025.
