A serious crash has shut down the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 at Toronto Road in Port Hope.
Northumberland OPP say about one kilometre west a vehicle has left the road.
According to initial reports, emergency crews – including police, fire and EMS – responded to the single-vehicle collision around 11 a.m.
Just before noon, an OPP spokesperson confirmed serious injuries, and that Ornge Air Ambulance had been called in.
The spokesperson also said the highway is anticipated to be closed for some time.
Police are asking for the public’s co-operation, urging motorists to follow the emergency detour route in place.
Significant congestion is already being reported along the highway.
