Northumberland County is now offering septic system re-inspections for property owners and home buyers in participating municipalities, including Cobourg, Brighton, and Port Hope.
This service ensures systems function safely and meet environmental standards, helping prevent issues like sewage leaks or waterway contamination.
The Ontario Building Code only mandates an initial inspection before a system is used. With the introduction of this service under County By-Law 18-2022, residents can now schedule follow-up inspections to assess system health, inspect septic tanks, and check for pollution risks.
Re-inspections, priced at $175 plus HST, include a detailed file search, system location, outbreak checks, and a comprehensive report. Property owners must also arrange septic tank pumping during the inspection. Findings of unsafe conditions must be addressed by the property owner.
“Maintaining a safe septic system is crucial to protect families, communities, and the environment,” said Dwayne Campbell, County Director of Economic Development and Planning. “This program encourages proactive steps to safeguard our waterways and health.”
To book, call 905-372-1929 or email inspections@northumberland.ca.
