This February, Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky and Councillor Todd Attridge will host two unique events exploring artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on communities and local governments at the Capitol Theatre.
Attridge tells us more about the event.
On Feb. 6, “What is AI Anyway?” invites attendees to explore the nature of AI and its potential future. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a public viewing of Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s 2024 TEDTalk, “What is AI Anyway?” The talk uses an engaging metaphor to explain AI as a “new digital species.”
Following the screening, a panel of experts, including Brent Barron (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research), Peter Lewis (Ontario Tech University), and Gavin Buttigieg (Bitstrapped), will discuss AI’s implications and answer audience questions. Tickets are $20, and admission is free for those under 25.
On Feb. 7, “AI in Action: Preparing Municipalities for the Future” offers a full-day workshop on how AI is being used by municipalities across Canada. Topics include wildfire detection, citizen engagement, housing stability, and climate resilience.
Attridge explains.
Speakers include Monique Crichlow of the Schwartz Reisman Institute and municipal leaders like Mike Melinyshyn from Innisfil and Craig Cooper from London. The event runs approximately seven hours, with tickets priced at $199.
According to Attridge, AI is a double-edged sword.
Both events promise insights into how AI is shaping smarter, safer, and more connected communities.
