Cobourg police are investigating a distraction theft after a woman reported having her necklace stolen in a retail parking lot over the weekend.
According to police, the victim was approached by an unknown man and woman offering to sell gold jewelry. During the exchange, her necklace was taken without her noticing.
Distraction thieves often work in teams, creating diversions to steal wallets, purses, and other valuables, sometimes in parking lots or while shoppers are browsing in stores, explain police.
The Cobourg Police Service is encouraging residents to be mindful of their surroundings, secure personal belongings, and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
If a distraction theft is in-progress or a suspect is still in the area, police advise calling 911 immediately.
