The Northumberland Nighthawks U16BB hockey team is stepping up to support, Lauchlyn, the youngest son of a local hockey family recently diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (T-LL), a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects immature T cells.
The team has organized a fundraiser on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Cobourg Community Centre, with proceeds going directly to the Walsh family.
U16BB Coach Will Lewis tells us what to expect.
The event will feature a raffle table, chuck a puck, 50/50 draws and will take place during both the U16BB and U15A games on Thursday evening.
Event organizer Sonia Hoover tells us they started planning the event last weekend.
Cash donations are also being accepted on-site and via e-transfer at U16nighthawks@outlook.com. Funds raised will help cover medical expenses, travel costs, and other financial challenges during this difficult time.
Hoover tells us that every donation will make a difference.
According to the Gofundme page organized by Carrie-Lynn Walsh’s sister Christine, their son is undergoing treatment at Sick Kid’s Hospital and his road to recovery will be a year-long journey that will be challenging, both emotionally and financially for the family.
T-LL is typically treated with intensive chemotherapy, and while survival rates can reach 80%, the disease remains life-threatening, especially if it relapses. Symptoms often include difficulty breathing, swelling in the head and neck, fatigue, and bleeding.
The Northumberland Nighthawks encourage the community to come together in support. “Every donation, big or small, helps,” said Hoover. “The Walsh family is not alone in this fight.”
