After another dumping of snow Thursday morning, Environment Canada has now also issued a special weather statement for western Northumberland County.
Environment Canada says “strong winds gusting up to 80 km/h” are expected this evening and tonight (Thursday, Feb. 6.)
The same alert is in effect for the eastern Northumberland, Quinte West and Belleville region.
“Strong southwesterly winds will shift to strong northwesterly winds tonight in the wake of a strong cold front,” explained officials, noting loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.
Residents are encouraged to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts. There is also a risk of blowing snow and snow squalls overnight.
Meanwhile, Northumberland OPP also issued a snow advisory this morning, saying the snowfall is reducing visibility and making for hazardous driving across Northumberland.
If travel isn’t essential, officials suggest people stay home and avoid unnecessary risks. If you have to drive, police urge motorists to slow down and drive to the conditions, increase following distance between vehicles, and ensure full light systems are on.
