Quinte West OPP say a young person is facing charges after an alleged incident at a Trenton school.
In a release issued Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, police said they responded on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at about 3:10 p.m., to a school on County Road 40, where it was reported a young person was threatening a staff member.
“There were no injuries in the incident,” said OPP, on Thursday.
As a result of the investigation, police said a Quinte-area youth was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was released with a future court date – the name of the youth will not be released and is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, said police, who provided no other details in their release.
Meanwhile, the Kawartha, Pine Ridge District School Board said mental health clinicians were onsite at Murray Centennial Public School Thursday after a “concerning incident” Wednesday where a student allegedly displayed a knife in class and threatened to harm students and a staffer in the classroom.
A letter from Principal Brandi Hollinger went out to families Wednesday, Feb. 5 about the incident. In response to inquiries with the school board, a spokesperson confirmed the alleged incident, describing it as “very concerning” for the school and families, and provided MBC with a copy of the principal’s letter.
“This afternoon (Wednesday, Feb. 5,) our staff intervened to assist an agitated student who (allegedly) displayed a knife in class and threatened to harm both students and a staff member in the classroom,” wrote Hollinger. “School staff were able to respond to the situation and remove the threatening student to the office.”
“We contacted Ontario Provincial Police services to assist, and they supported us at the school in response to the situation. The student will not be returning to school,” Hollinger’s letter further reads.
“The safety of our students is always foremost in our minds, and we are thankful the incident was resolved without injury to any parties,” wrote Hollinger. “We also appreciate that this incident may be upsetting for students, and we will have mental health clinician’s onsite tomorrow (Thursday) to support students in processing the incident.”
The board spokesperson confirmed with MBC that despite Thursday’s weather clinicians were onsite at the County Road 40 Trenton school.
Hollinger also stated that if parents feel their kids could benefit from further supports to contact the school office.
“Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions about this incident,” the letter reads.
No other details have been released. None of these allegations or charges have been proven in court.
