A concerned citizen helped take a driver who allegedly registered twice the legal limit off the roads, says Northumberland OPP.
The alleged incident happened Wednesday, Feb. 19, at about 7:30 p.m., when a concerned motorist found a black Nissan pick-up truck that appeared to have spun out on County Road 22, east of County Road 45, said police. The individual contacted OPP as the truck was blocking a lane on the road, added police.
After police arrived on scene and spoke with the driver of the pick-up truck, officers allegedly detected an odour of alcohol. The driver was taken into custody and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing, with police saying the accused registered more than twice the legal limit.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 79-year-old resident of the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus,) and operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.
None of these charges have been proven in court. The accused will appear in Cobourg court on March 26, reported OPP.
Police continue to ask citizens to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
