Port Hope’s annual spring hydrant flushing program is set to begin April 7, running through May 16 on weekdays.
The program ensures proper water flow and pressure throughout the urban area.
Crews will flush hydrants on the west side of the Ganaraska River in the mornings from 7 a.m. to noon and on the east side in the afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During flushing, residents may notice lower water pressure and discoloured water, so the municipality advises against doing laundry at these times.
As part of this year’s program, staff will conduct flow testing on 125 hydrants to assess water supply capacity. Hydrants may be repainted based on test results, with a four-year plan in place to evaluate and update all urban hydrants.
Additionally, reflective ear markers will be installed on hydrants to improve visibility for firefighters in low-light conditions. Similar markers have already been implemented in surrounding municipalities.
