Cobourg police are urging residents to stay alert after an 86-year-old woman reported the theft of her wallet while grocery shopping in town.
According to a release on Monday, April 14, the woman was targeted during what police describe as a distraction theft – a type of theft where a person is deliberately distracted so their valuables can be stolen without them noticing.
After the incident, the woman was notified of approximately $200 in fraudulent credit card charges at a local business. She cancelled her card, and police said the investigation remains ongoing.
Distraction thefts are often committed by people working in teams. Police said one or more individuals will distract a victim by asking for help, creating a commotion, or getting unusually close. The theft often occurs while the victim is in a store aisle, checking out or in a parking lot.
“Victims may not realize until later that their property has been taken,” Cobourg police noted.
To help prevent distraction thefts, the Cobourg Police Service said the public to remain aware of their surroundings, keep personal items in sight at all times, and avoid leaving wallets or purses unattended.
They also urge residents to report any suspicious activity. If a suspect is seen or nearby, call 911 immediately.
