The Cobourg Police Service has concluded its May Selective Traffic Enforcement Project, aimed at reducing dangerous driving and improving road safety in the community.
The initiative aligned with Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign held May 13 to 19, promoting the theme “ROAD SAFETY: Every road. Every day. Everyone.”
Throughout May, local officers focused on high-risk behaviours including impaired, distracted and aggressive driving, along with seatbelt violations. In total, police laid 21 charges-four for impaired driving, ten for distracted driving, five for aggressive or careless driving, and two for not wearing a seatbelt. Numerous warnings were also issued for various traffic offences.
In addition to enforcement, Cobourg Police held a seatbelt awareness day and a car seat safety clinic on May 25. Officers engaged with more than 200 community members at seatbelt checkpoints, while 15 families received guidance on proper car seat installation from certified technicians.
Police say education and awareness are just as important as enforcement and encourage all drivers to stay alert, follow the rules of the road, and make safety a priority every day.
