Port Hope Police are investigating two distraction thefts that occurred at local retail stores in recent weeks, and are warning the public and staff to stay alert.
Police say the first theft happened on May 16, and the second on June 7. In both cases, suspects entered stores and targeted the cosmetics sections. One person would reportedly distract store employees, while an accomplice stole merchandise. Investigators believe the suspects are working in coordinated groups.
“These thefts appear to be carefully planned,” police said in a statement. “We are urging store staff to remain vigilant and for shoppers to be mindful of their belongings.”
Police have released surveillance images from the stores and are hoping the public can help identify those involved. No injuries were reported in either incident, but the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone who recognises the individuals in the photos or has information is asked to contact Port Hope Police at 905-885-8123. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
Police also encourage store owners to review their in-store security procedures and to report any suspicious activity right away.
More information may be released as the investigation continues.
