A century of community spirit will be on full display this summer as Harwood Memorial Park and Hall celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The free event takes place Saturday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 5453 Front St. in Harwood, starting with a parade and continuing with games, races and live celebrations.
“It’s a celebration of 100 years and it’s important to the community. It’s also a tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives during (the First World War),” said Harwood Memorial Park and Recreation Club Chair Jay Chatten.
Built in 1925 on land donated by Alexander Campbell, the hall and park were created through local efforts and a building plan provided by U.S. Senator and summer visitor George Rogers. Timber came from area road allowances and was milled nearby.
A mural now on the rear stage wall honours nine local men lost in the First World War and tells the story of the property’s community roots.
The hall continues to be a hub for local activities, including monthly breakfasts, sports, library services, reunions, dances and a public artesian well.
Volunteers keep the facility going, and Chatten encourages both youth and adults to get involved.
The July 19 celebration is open to all and promises a full day of fun, history and hometown pride.
