Cobourg and Port Hope Fire Services are warning residents to be cautious after reports of fraudulent “home fire safety checks” across Ontario.
According to both departments, scammers have been approaching homeowners under the guise of fire safety professionals, often luring them with a “free giveaway” to collect their address and contact information. Shortly afterward, representatives arrive at the home, using fear-based tactics such as disturbing videos and false claims about faulty alarms to pressure residents into buying fire protection systems that can cost thousands of dollars.
In some cases, residents have reported being coerced or frightened into purchases they didn’t need.
Officials want to remind the public that both Cobourg and Port Hope Fire Services do conduct door-to-door smoke alarm programs from time to time but legitimate staff will always wear official uniforms, carry municipal identification, and arrive in clearly marked fire department vehicles. They will never attempt to sell fire safety equipment or pressure you into a purchase.
Under Ontario law, homes must have working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
If you have any doubts or questions about someone at your door, contact your local fire department directly. To report suspicious behaviour, contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
For trusted fire safety information, call Port Hope Fire Services at 905-753-2230 or the Cobourg Fire Department at 905-372-9789.
