Canada’s escalating trade dispute with the United States and the growing conflict between the U.S. and Iran are drawing sharp reaction from the federal opposition.
Northumberland-Clarke MP Philip Lawrence, who serves as the Conservative Party’s lead critic on Bill C-5, says he supports the government’s efforts to protect Canadian industry.
Tensions flared again recently when the U.S. reintroduced tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, prompting concern from manufacturers and exporters across the county. Federal officials are weighing possible retaliatory measures.
Lawrence also took aim at the federal government’s approach to trade policy. He called on the government to return to the stronger posture it took during the election in regards to the Trump administration.
Turning to the Middle East, Lawrence reaffirmed the Conservative Party’s position that Canada must remain a strong supporter of Israel, especially during times of instability.
Lawrence said the federal government should act decisively to protect Canadian interests and values at home and abroad.
