The Ontario government is marking Canada Day with a province-wide free fishing opportunity for all Canadian residents from June 28 to July 6, 2025.
This marks the final free fishing period of the year, giving newcomers and long-time anglers alike the chance to cast a line without needing a licence. The Ministry of Natural Resources says it’s a perfect way to connect with nature, support tourism, and enjoy one of Ontario’s best outdoor traditions.
“This week is the perfect chance to gather with friends and family to reel in new experiences,” said Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris. “Whether you’re a beginner or a fishing pro, there’s no better way to celebrate Canada.”
Participants must still follow all conservation licence rules, including catch limits, size restrictions, and area regulations. Valid government-issued ID must be carried at all times.
Fishing is a big part of Ontario’s economy, with over one million licensed anglers spending $1.75 billion annually. Free fishing weeks help reduce barriers and give more people the chance to enjoy the sport.
Outside of designated free fishing periods, most residents between 18 and 64 require an Outdoors Card and licence. However, veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members can fish for free year-round.
