The Ontario government is investing over $9.1 million to support five innovation projects in Eastern Ontario’s forest sector, with the goal of protecting jobs, strengthening regional economies, and developing new uses for forest by-products.
The funding comes from the Forest Biomass Program, part of Ontario’s broader plan to modernize the forestry industry while promoting sustainability and economic growth.
The largest investment is $4.6 million for Haliburton Forest Biochar, which is expanding its production of engineered biochar-a renewable material used in energy, agriculture, and water purification. Infinite Carbon will receive $3.37 million to launch a pilot plant producing sustainable carbon for steelmaking.
Other recipients include:
- Killaloe Wood Products, receiving $952,437 for mobile equipment to harvest more biomass.
- McRae Mills, receiving $146,475 for upgraded conveyor systems.
- Bancroft Minden Forest Company, receiving $20,000 for a study on biomass market potential.
“These investments support innovation and create good-paying local jobs while helping reduce waste and promote responsible forest management,” said Associate Minister of Forestry Kevin Holland.
The province says the Forest Biomass Program has already delivered over $40 million to more than 50 projects since its launch in 2022, with ongoing goals of building new markets and strengthening supply chains.
Industry groups, local MPPs, and company leaders say the support will help Eastern Ontario’s forest sector remain competitive and resilient while contributing to a cleaner, low-carbon future.
