Cobourg police are continuing to investigate an alleged assault that left one person with serious injuries in the area of Fisher and Kerr Streets.
Police said the incident happened on Tuesday, July 15 and involved two individuals staying in a tent. The pair were attacked with bear spray and a baseball bat, reported police.
One victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, while the other sustained minor injuries, said police.
No arrests have been made, and Cobourg police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or video footage from the area is asked to contact police.
Meanwhile, Mayor Lucas Cleveland has released the following statement in the wake of the incident:
“I do not comment on police investigations. I have full faith that the Cobourg Police Service will investigate this unfortunate incident appropriately.
We have no idea yet the circumstances surrounding the incident, any possible motives or potential for interconnectedness there may be between the individuals involved.
Speculating on the reasons for the incident to fit certain narratives is wildly inappropriate.
There is no place now or ever for this type of criminality in our community.”
Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Updates will be shared as the investigation continues.
