Cobourg Police Service has concluded its August Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which focused on improving intersection safety throughout the community.
The initiative targeted high-risk behaviours such as failing to stop at red lights or stop signs, rolling stops and not yielding the right-of-way to pedestrians and other vehicles, reported police.
During the program, officers issued 28 tickets and 13 warnings for disobeying stop signs, seven tickets and one warning for failing to stop at red lights, and five tickets with four warnings for driving the wrong way. Three tickets were issued for failing to stop for emergency vehicles, along with numerous other tickets and warnings for various traffic offences, said the service.
The STEP initiative combines enforcement and public education to reduce traffic risks and is part of CPS’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all road users, explained police.
Police continue to remind drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians that intersection safety is a shared responsibility. Road users are urged to stay alert, follow traffic signals, and approach intersections cautiously.
