On September 11, 2025, Cobourg police conducted a traffic stop on King Street East, discovering cannabis in the possession of a driver under the age of 19. The cannabis, while in its original packaging, had been opened and was within reach of the driver, resulting in two offence notices.
Police remind residents that under the Cannabis Control Act, 2019, individuals under 19 are prohibited from possessing any cannabis. Officers also warn that consuming cannabis before or while driving is illegal and impairs motor skills, reaction time, and decision-making, increasing the risk of accidents.
Drivers are advised to store cannabis in a sealed package and out of reach while operating a vehicle. The stop serves as a reminder of the legal and safety responsibilities associated with cannabis use, especially for young people. Cobourg police encourage the community to make responsible choices, follow the law, and prioritize safety to protect themselves, passengers, and others on the road.
