Ontario is hosting its annual Level Up! career fairs to connect students, educators, and jobseekers with in-demand careers in the skilled trades.
The fairs will run for 29 days across 12 communities, including local stops in Grafton this week on September 17 and 18, and Oshawa from November 18 to 20.
The fairs feature over 200 interactive exhibitors and hands-on demonstrations, allowing attendees to explore careers from electricians and boilermakers to heavy equipment operators and automotive technicians. Students in grades 7 to 12 can connect with tradespeople and employers, while parents and jobseekers can learn about apprenticeship opportunities and career pathways.
Local MPP and Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini says the event is a chance to explore careers that are currently in high demand.
Piccini says the fairs aim to inspire the next generation of skilled workers and strengthen Ontario’s workforce.
He also tells us the fairs will support both students and job seekers looking at in-demand careers in the trades.
Piccini tells us students will be invited exclusively from 9 am to 2 pm.
The fairs also address workforce challenges, including a growing demand for infrastructure projects and one in three tradespeople nearing retirement. More than 16,000 youth aged 15 to 24 are registered for apprenticeships this year, the highest in the past decade. Skilled Trades Ontario CEO Candice White says the events provide real exposure to the trades and help build the workforce Ontario needs.
Registration for students is available through school boards’ Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs or guidance counsellors. Admission is free, and the events offer a mix of demonstrations, exhibits, and networking opportunities to explore careers in the skilled trades.
