Police are reminding residents to stay vigilant around train tracks as the 22nd annual Rail Safety Week continues across North America. Running September 15-21, 2025, the campaign is led by Operation Lifesaver Canada and aims to reduce preventable deaths and injuries from railway incidents.
This year’s theme, “There’s No Undo Button,” highlights how rail-related collisions and trespassing incidents are often irreversible but entirely preventable. More than 2,100 people are killed or seriously injured each year in Canada and the U.S. at railway crossings or while trespassing on tracks.
Officials say with rail crossings and active lines running alongside residential neighbourhoods in Brighton, Cobourg and Port Hope, residents should make rail safety a priority. Authorities are urging residents to look both ways before crossing, never stop on the tracks, avoid driving around lowered gates, obey all railway signs and signals, and never use tracks as shortcuts or recreational paths.
On Wednesday, September 17, Cobourg police will partner with the Cobourg Fire Department and CPKC Police Service for “Operation Clear Track,” North America’s largest rail-safety enforcement initiative. Officers and firefighters will engage with drivers, pedestrians and cyclists across Cobourg, distributing rail-safety tip sheets and answering questions.
Throughout the week, Cobourg Police will also share rail-safety messages on social media to raise awareness and encourage safe behaviour around trains. Residents can learn more about Rail Safety Week and Operation Clear Track at operationlifesaver.ca.
