Ontario has announced a feasibility study for a new east-west pipeline and energy corridor aimed at strengthening Canadian energy security, creating jobs and supporting domestic manufacturing.
The province says the corridor would transport oil and gas from Alberta and Saskatchewan to southern Ontario refineries and ports on James Bay, Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes, using Canadian steel throughout.
Premier Doug Ford said the project will help build a more competitive and resilient economy, reduce reliance on the United States and generate employment opportunities across the country.
“This nation-building pipeline and energy corridor will unite our country and help unlock new markets for Canada’s energy resources,” Ford said.
The feasibility study, expected to be completed next year, will deliver corridor and site options, cost analysis and evaluate complementary infrastructure opportunities, including mineral exports, grid upgrades, and strategic petroleum reserves. The project will also honour consultations with Indigenous communities and explore pathways for economic reconciliation and equity participation, the province said.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe emphasized interprovincial co-operation and responsible energy development, saying the corridor could strengthen Canada’s position in global energy markets.
Ontario ministers Stephen Lecce, George Pirie and Greg Rickford noted the project would provide long-term economic benefits, secure energy for homes and businesses and create pathways for First Nations-led growth. The study is being led by an advisory team including GHD Limited, Ernst & Young, Mokwateh, AtkinsRéalis Group, Wood PLC, Turner & Townsend and Infrastructure Ontario.
The government said the east-west energy corridor feasibility study represents a major step in Ontario’s plan to protect the province’s energy security, stimulate economic growth and develop Canada’s resources sustainably while positioning the country as a global energy leader.
