Community Care Northumberland is once again inviting residents to help make the holidays brighter for local seniors through its ninth annual Adopt a Grandparent program.
The initiative connects community members with older adults who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation, providing them with thoughtful gifts and a reminder that they are cared for during the holiday season. Last year, the program reached more than 130 “grandparents” across Northumberland County.
Community Care Northumberland CEO Trish Baird says the campaign captures the true spirit of the season. “This program brings smiles of appreciation not only from our grandparents but from the many individuals and families who support the gifts and from the volunteers and staff who deliver them,” she said.
A note received last year from one of the recipients described the joy these simple gestures can bring. The senior wrote, “You made Christmas for me, my cat, and my dog. Thank you.”
Those interested in adopting a grandparent can contact Community Care Northumberland by phone at 1-866-514-5774 or email wellness@commcare.ca. Purchased gifts can be dropped off unwrapped-but in gift bags or baskets-at local offices by Friday, December 5 for delivery the week before Christmas.
Donations are also accepted for those who prefer to have Community Care staff purchase items on their behalf.
Gift ideas include gift cards for local businesses or certificates for Community Care programs such as Meals on Wheels or Transportation.
