Northumberland Paramedics has received a $25,000 boost through the province to strengthen mental health supports for front-line emergency workers.
The funding was awarded through Ontario’s Mental Health Supports for Public Safety Personnel grant program, which provides targeted resources for first-responders. Across the province, the Ontario government is investing $32 million to expand specialized mental health services for public safety personnel, it was recently announced.
Locally, the funding will allow Northumberland Paramedics to enhance a range of internal wellness initiatives. These include expanded peer support training, leadership development, wellness focused programming, and education designed to reduce stigma around mental health in the workplace.
Paramedic leadership said the funding supports a culture where mental health care is viewed as an essential part of job readiness. By encouraging early support and proactive care, the service aims to help staff build resilience and better manage the psychological demands of emergency response work.
Northumberland County officials welcomed the investment, noting that paramedics regularly encounter challenging and traumatic situations while serving residents. They said access to appropriate mental health supports helps ensure paramedics can recover from difficult calls and continue providing safe and effective care.
The local funding announcement is part of the province’s broader commitment to supporting first-responders, recognizing the critical role they play in community safety and the importance of maintaining their mental wellbeing.
County leaders added that the expanded supports will benefit both paramedics and the communities they serve by strengthening the overall emergency response system.
