Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police say four drivers are facing impaired operation charges following separate incidents over the weekend, including three arrests within approximately one hour.
Police report the first incident occurred January 2 around 9:50 p.m., when officers on patrol along Highway 401 westbound in the Municipality of Brighton observed a vehicle travelling at an unusually slow speed. The vehicle was stopped, and an impaired operation investigation was initiated. A 45-year-old man from Calgary, Alberta, was arrested and later charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
About 40 minutes later, police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Perry Avenue in Brighton. Officers attended and spoke with the driver before beginning an impaired operation investigation. A 68-year-old man from Brighton was taken into custody and charged with similar impaired driving offences.
Around the same time, an officer on patrol in Hamilton Township received an alert from an in-cruiser automated licence plate recognition system regarding a vehicle with an unattached plate. Police say the stop led to another impaired operation investigation and the arrest of a 55-year-old Hamilton Township resident.
A fourth arrest occurred January 3 around 6 p.m. when a driver entered the Brighton OPP detachment the wrong way on Dundas Street. Police say the driver was also suspended and now faces multiple charges.
All accused are scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in February 2026. Police remind motorists that impaired driving is a criminal offence and encourage anyone who suspects an impaired driver to call 9-1-1.
