The Town of Cobourg will recognize Black History Month with a Pan African Flag raising ceremony at Victoria Hall on Friday afternoon.
The event will take place at 2 p.m. at the community flagpole outside Victoria Hall on King Street West, following a recent delegation to council. The ceremony is intended to highlight Black history, culture and contributions, while also acknowledging the ongoing impacts of racism and discrimination.
Town officials say Black History Month provides an opportunity for communities to celebrate achievements and reflect on historical and present day challenges, while continuing work toward inclusion and equity.
The Pan African flag was first created in 1920 and features red, black and green colours. Those colours are widely recognized as symbols of unity, identity and liberation for people of African heritage, and are reflected in the national flags of several African countries.
Angela Grogan of the Northumberland Diverse People Coalition is expected to deliver brief remarks ahead of the flag raising.
The ceremony is open to the public. Town officials say the event is part of broader efforts to recognize diversity and foster a welcoming community for all residents.
