Canadian Nuclear Laboratories says work under the Port Hope Area Initiative continues to move toward completion, with major project work expected to wrap up by 2027.
In its latest progress update, CNL says dredging at Port Hope Harbour is complete, and remediation on the Centre Pier is now more than 90 per cent finished.
The update also highlights restoration milestones, including completion at the Alexander Street Ravine and the planting of new trees and shrubs. CNL says a new playground at the west beach is now open, while some sections remain fenced as the full beach restoration continues, with additional amenities expected once that work wraps up in 2026.
For private properties, CNL notes residents have raised concerns about timing, tree removal, and potential infrastructure impacts. The update emphasizes participation is voluntary and says homeowners have choices around how work is carried out.
CNL also says it is making operational changes intended to reduce disruption and move properties through the remediation process more quickly, including using advanced scanning tools to verify results and adjusting approaches for smaller volume sites.
The update includes a “Pathway to Compliance” outline for residents. It describes options that include full participation, an owner directed remediation approach under a special circumstances protocol, or opting out and receiving a radiological status letter.
CNL says it is also responding to resident feedback by launching new communication initiatives, including focused sessions with key sectors, regular newsletters, updates through its website and social media, and a resident portal with property specific information that is expected to be ready in 2026.
