A beloved tradition is returning next weekend at Presqu’ile Provincial Park in Brighton.
Bev Cook with the Friends of Presqu’ile Park says the 48th edition of Waterfowl Weekend on March 14 and 15 is sure to wow visitors again this year.
“It is a time for us to enjoy the waterfowl, and we have over 20 species that arrive in Presqu’ile in the bay each spring,” she says.
And while some of the species will stay all summer, some are just dropping in on their way further north or will eventually go nesting once the waterways open up in Northern Ontario and Manitoba, she explains.
In other words, this is the weekend to see some of these birds.
Cook tells us what Waterfowl Weekend is all about and what you can expect next Saturday and Sunday.
She notes there are more than a couple of locations in the park that are “excellent for viewing.”
Whether you’re new to birding or an experienced birder, Cook says the weekend is full of opportunities to learn from naturalist-led viewings and through an array of activities running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
The iconic Lighthouse Interpretive Centre will also be open both days showcasing historical displays and volunteers on hand to field questions. The popular duck-themed displays are returning to the Nature Centre, and there will also be activities for kids and bird watchers of all ages.
What’s more, despite the long winter and lots of ice, it’s now looking like an ideal weekend for the event as the ice is just starting to melt (and if the milder weather continues this week.)
Cook explains why this matters.
“So it should be really good viewing by next weekend.”
The gift shop will also be open to support the Friends’ work and the Friends are hosting their fundraising barbecue both days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre.
Cook notes events like this support the park and Friends’ shared goals.
The Friends of Presqu’ile Park is described as a charitable organization devoted to preserving and protecting the natural heritage of the park. Volunteers work to enhance educational opportunities for park visitors, help with park activities, educational and environmental projects, and more.
