Cobourg police say impaired driving enforcement remained a priority into the new year, following the results of the Festive RIDE campaign.
As part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, officers increased their presence on local roadways throughout January and February, continuing efforts to detect and deter impaired driving.
Police say a total of eight RIDE programs were conducted over the two-month period, during which officers checked more than 1,300 vehicles.
As a result of the enforcement initiative, police report three impaired driving arrests, including two alcohol-related cases and one drug-related case.
Officers also issued five Approved Screening Device demands, along with a number of cautions for various Highway Traffic Act offences.
Cobourg police say impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal collisions, noting that alcohol, drugs and fatigue can all significantly impact a driver’s ability to react and make safe decisions.
Constable Taylor Emmerton says continuing enforcement beyond the holiday season reinforces the message that impaired driving is a year-round concern.
Police are thanking residents for their cooperation during RIDE initiatives and are encouraging the public to continue reporting suspected impaired drivers.
Anyone who believes a driver may be impaired is urged to call 9-1-1.
Police say ongoing enforcement and public awareness are key to keeping Cobourg roads safe throughout the year.
